They Have Arrived

They Have Arrived
Never had an issue with bee’s or wasps, until now.

If you’ve never been stung by a paper wasp, consider yourself lucky! Bee researcher Justin Schmidt, who developed the Schmidt Sting Pain Scale described the sting of a paper wasp as "like spilling a beaker of hydrochloric acid on a paper cut." It’s generally accepted that the paper wasp ranks 3rd for the most painful sting, (the bullet ant ranks 1st & tarantula hawk wasp 2nd).

Let me just say that when you are sound asleep and get stung on the arm, you wake up instantly….panicked and swiping at whatever just got you… causing usually another sting defending itself. The sting eventually turns to an ache in the muscle and area around it, lasting from 10min to a couple hours.

Usually inactive at night, a full spectrum bulb in you nightstand reading light can mess with their schedule. We thought they were coming in through a window air conditioner or something like that, but every time we thought we got it… wham! I was stung aprox 15 times over a 2-1/2 month period. Then we finally found how they were getting in, fixed it, thought we were done with them. NOPE! One must have been hiding somewhere in the room, and a few weeks later wham, I got it again. This time by the time I got up in the morning my arm swelled from the elbow to hand.

I did the typical G thing… ignored it and went to work. My boss noticed it was getting worse after only 1/2 hr at work and took me to an emergency room. I told her she was being paranoid, the ER told her another hour or so and it would have been an ambulance. WTF? I’m not allergic to bee’s (everything else in the natural world yes, but not bee/wasps). Apparently the intervals between the stings were just enough to trigger some kind of whatevertheheck biological reaction, and walla…. and there’s no way to predict how bad a reaction will be, each time is different.

Go figure, now how am I supposed to get macro close-ups like I want with my limited lens capabilities…. well I stay about 6feet away and try to zoom. Eventually I hope to be in a position to afford another lens, but likely will be a year or more.

The Slab

The Slab
This is my car, a 1984 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Regency Brougham. All original except the tires, windshield wipers, and gasoline (and the other usual stuff).

(Update) The driver’s side seatbelt, windshield, and driver’s window motor have all been replaced. Still waiting to be fixed are the speedometer, air conditioner, and driver’s side seat belt again (the replacement I got is a brown belt from a Chevrolet Caprice, and eventually I want to put a tan Oldsmobile belt back in. Unfortunately some water got into the trunk at some point and seems to have ruined the original belt with rust and mold stains)

Also the car was broken into a couple years ago (at the time the power window was broken and there was a piece of plastic over the driver’s window), despite the fact that there was nothing of value inside. The would-be thieves apparently thought there would be something valuable in the trunk and were too stupid to realize that a twenty cubic foot trunk doesn’t need to pass through the back seat, so they pulled a corner of the seat away from the package shelf and slashed through the leather flap that connects the arm rest to the seat. I don’t know how that could be fixed apart from having the back seat completely replaced, but when the armrest is up the damage isn’t noticeable(I was away in college at the time it happened, and when my parents told me the cars had been broken into they didn’t even realize they had done anything. I didn’t find out the extent of the damage until I came home for the summer a few months later).
